Reasons to Sell Your Junk Car

by Joe Ferguson on December 20, 2012

If you have a junk car but can’t find it in yourself to get rid of it, either because of sentimental attachment or laziness, here are some reasons to let your dilapidated automobile go. This is part 1 in a 3- part series attempting to convince you to dispose of your junk car.

Face it: your car is just a shell of its former self these days and no matter how long you let it sit in your front yard or garage, it’s not going to spring back to life. Unless you’re planning on turning that automotive cadaver into a Frankenstein’s Monster of a ride, you’re going to want to dispose of that metal carcass.

2 Out of 5 Reasons to Sell Your Junk Car

Give Back to the Community

If you don’t need the car, its parts, or the money from selling it off, consider donating it. Even if it has no hope of ever running again, profits from selling the parts could be used for a worthy cause in your community. Besides, you still get to write it off as a deduction on your taxes.

Give Back to the Environment

It could be dangerous to have an old rust bucket of a junk car leaking various chemicals and fluids in the street or yard. Instead of damaging the environment around your community, why not enhance it?

If you live in a coastal area, consider turning your useless car – along with cement blocks or limestone – into an artificial reef. Artificial reefs are a unique way to attempt offsetting damage caused to the marine ecosystem. As more plastics and other pollutants are continuously dumped into the ocean, this could be a great way to turn your junk car from hazardous waste into a jungle gym for a plethora of marine life.

Anything is better than letting your old car collect dust and be of no use to anyone. Do not attempt this project without consulting a group who specializes in projects like these; you could get into serious trouble if you don’t take the proper precautions of ridding your car of hazardous chemicals and materials. Trying to create an artificial reef on your own and doing a poor job could further pollute the body of water and that would defeat the entire purpose of the project.

Next time we’ll cover more reasons your junk car would be better off out of your hands and we’ll discuss things you could buy with the money you get after you sell your junk car.
