An Electric New Mercedes-Benz

by Nate Torvik on October 2, 2012

The revolutionary new 2013 B-Class models from Mercedes-Benz have taken the world by storm in the past few months. Those that may think Mercedes is done with the advancements for the B-Class are quite mistaken, because in the 2014 model year, Mercedes will take this ground-breaking vehicle to another level…an electric one.

Debuting at the Paris Motor Show at the end of September, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive will be one more vehicle in the Mercedes lineup that will continue Mercedes advancement in environmental research and development. An SLS AMG Electric Drive will also be in attendance in Paris. These new Electric Drive models will lead the way in Mercedes attack on the electric car market.

The key behind the creation of this innovative automobile was a partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Tesla. Tesla Motors was founded back in 2003 with the mission to not only create emission-free, electric vehicles, but to also do it in style. Through its partnership with Tesla, Mercedes will soon launch a full assault on the electric vehicle market.

Although still classified as a concept car, the B-Class Electric Drive is far more than a dream. It is clear that Mercedes is very serious about finding a solution to our environmental concerns and is all in on the alternative energy vehicle game. The B-Class Electric Drive will feature a 100kW electric motor that produces 134 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque. The Electric Drive will also feature Mercedes new Energy Space modular platform, which utilizes multiple fuel tanks strategically located throughout the vehicle to offer more space for passengers and cargo. With an estimated range of 124 miles per charge, the B-Class Electric Drive will outperform some of the more common electric vehicles (EVs) such as the Nissan Leaf, but will still be looking up to some of the Tesla models, like the Model S and its standard 160 miles per charge.

Whether it is electricity, natural gas, hydrogen fuel, or any other number of alternative power options, Mercedes-Benz is one of the automotive industry leaders when it comes to improving the environment via its vehicles. Perhaps one day we will all drive vehicles that will produce no emissions, but for now, we can look forward to the advancements that Mercedes and many other companies are making to improve the world in which we live.
